Cynthia Meyers - Bio Page

In 1977, my life changed course when I answered a want ad in the Sacramento Bee  (there was no Craigslist back then) for something called a “financial planning firm,” having no idea what this was. I had been working as a writer/editor of children’s textbooks for various Bay Area firms and selling original crossword puzzles to Cricket magazine, putting my literature degree to some use.  I answered this ad because my husband of three years and I had just relocated from Menlo Park to Sacramento and I found myself at a crossroads, having concluded that the publishing profession was not quite right for me in that it satisfied my creative side, or right brain, but my left brain was left unsatisfied.  I desired more of a balance.  Having been a participant in Junior Achievement at age 14 and having helped my father in his insurance brokerage business, I was experiencing a pull to be a part of the business world.  Not knowing where to turn, I decided that I would find a job in a new field and pursue an MBA at the same time, looking for a profession that would incorporate my talents, develop my skills, and help others live fulfilling lives.  So I answered the ad, entered the world of financial planning, and found the fulfilling career I had been seeking.

Having been blessed with mentorship from one of the earliest Sacramento financial planners, Al Balliet, I opened my own business in 1983 and never looked back. I give thanks every day for being a part of this profession, where I can put my talents and expertise to the best possible use through helping others plot their course through life’s many transitions to live fulfilling, happy lives.  I continue to give back to the community by mentoring employees and others in the financial planning field.

My husband and I celebrated our 40th anniversary in August 2014.  For the past 20 years, we have spent every Friday night dancing—salsa, cumbia, son and cha-cha, rhumba, East Coast swing, West Coast swing, and bolero.  In preparation for the celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary, we studied Italian together for many years and we continue our studies and our Italian travels.

A little known fact that also changed my life perspective was the opportunity to live in Bangalore, India, for the school year of 1970-1971.

I continue to be an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction.  Favorite authors over the years include Dickens, Austen, Hardy, Tolstoy, and Dostoevsky.  Current favorites are Marilynne Robinson, Andrea Camilleri, Rex Stout, P.G. Wodehouse, Alexandra Fuller, Erik Larson, Peter Drucker, Michael Lewis, and David Rock.  Things that bring me joy are my husband, my family, my friends, my fellow employees, playing racquetball, and good music.
